Did you turn off all your phone notifications to s Did you turn off all your phone notifications to stop yourself reacting and then still find yourself picking up your phone to check all your apps or your email?

It’s crazy isn’t it?

You know you don’t want to do it but you do it anyway

Like unconsciously scratching an itch on the back of your neck.

you’ve already done it almost before you realised you had an itch in the first place.

Reacting to that mental itch in the moment you have it, is a form of distraction. It is also part of a pre-programmed physical behaviour pattern.

And like any program we can reprogram it, with a bit of awareness, a bit of discomfort, a pause ……

To wait long enough to know what the itch is and wait to see if it’ll go away

There’s a practice in meditation called determined stillness that helps us learn just that.

Where we aim to not move a muscle. Yes it’s about the physical body but it also shines a light on all those times that we react before we even realise we reacted.

And when you start paying attention, your brain starts paying attention and the reprogramming begins.

If you’re interested in finding out more about how to take these ideas into YOUR life then let’s have a conversation. DM or comment LETS TALK
System overload - but you can change it! Are the System overload - but you can change it!

Are there times when you feel overloaded with everything that is going on around you?

On any one day you are constantly taking in so much and noise, how good would it feel to take back some control over what you are sensing and thinking?

Momentary meditation is a game changer if you get caught up in your head.

It teaches you to be aware of the senses, of what is going on within the framework of your own body and therefore gain control of them

In this moment ask yourself

What can you feel?
What can you hear?
What can you smell?

And simply be present with it all.

No room for thinking, because you are just IN experience of what you are sensing - one sense at a time.

You have control of what you pay attention to!

What happens when the crisis is over? Being in fi What happens when the crisis is over?

Being in fight or survival mode isn’t the problem. Getting stuck there is.

Being the one who is good in a crisis can be a double edged sword

Coping in challenging situations is a good thing to do, no question.

Being the kind of person you’d want to have your back when things go wrong.

When you’re coping you’re typically ‘fighting’ - taking action, dealing with the obstacles.
Supporting others emotionally, having challenging conversations, dealing with frustration and set backs

But what happens when you have dealt with the issue, when the crisis or challenging situation is over?

Do you have a way to help your body find its way back to equilibrium?

Your body wants to find homeostasis - balance - the neutral position where it can operate from.

Controlled by our nervous system and hormones, the body finds balance through the breath, the circulation, fluid and electrolyte levels, digestion, the skin - and (with my physio head on) it is equally true of the joints, the muscles, and connective tissue.

So if you never let your nervous system know it’s safe to go back into balance, you stay in survival mode - in heightened levels of stress - and it’s harder for the rest of your body too.

Breathwork is the perfect way to let your body know it’s safe to return to equilibrium and that is why it is the first part of any meditation practice.

Comment BREATHE and I’ll send you a short breathwork practice to help you find that calming balance.

The healthiest person at the pre-op. Sure 😳 But The healthiest person at the pre-op.

Sure 😳

But the pre-op was for a mastectomy, lumpectomy and a lymph node clearance to treat the bilateral breast cancer - so maybe not that healthy underneath?

What appears on the surface and what’s actually going on underneath clearly tell two different stories.

No one can ever confirm it, but the stress I was living with and holding onto played some part in the development of my cancer, I’m sure of it.

It also proves to be the hardest thing for me to manage in my recovery and how I live my life.

Which is why creating space, breathing, meditation, journaling and writing have become so important.

In the same way I’m careful about:

🍌what I eat to stay healthy

🏋️‍♀️going to the gym three or four times a week to stay physically fit

👌🏻seeing manual therapist to keep my body fit for purpose

🙏I use all these things to manage my mind, my mood and to make space to listen to my heart

If you feel that a check-in on how you’re living, deciding where you can make the changes you actually have control over and bringing the focus to make it happen might be what you are looking for then let’s talk.

Get in touch to book a call - no pressure, no obligation, just conversation🙏

Meditating to make all this an option There is an Meditating to make all this an option

There is an old Zen saying that goes something like this:
“You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes a day. Unless you’re too busy; then you should sit for an hour”

When I look at my schedule there is a lot! - client calls, teaching, clinical time with therapy clients, writing, the gym, walk the dog, coffee with a friend, time to read, time spent on causes that matter to me, food shopping, cooking, family time, getting to bed early for enough sleep to get up nice and early and do it all again!!!

Some weeks I take it all in my stride 🙌🏻

And others

I could cry 😢

my thoughts and my schedule are literally falling out of my ears

AND here’s the funny thing

I still choose this busy ……

So what do I do to make it work for me?

Bring focus, attention and do it all on purpose

And use my daily meditation practice to help me build the capacity to make all of this an option.

There’s still time to sign up to join us next week on INNER LIGHT - link in bio.
